Let’s learn today some phrasal verbs that are used in business contexts.
1- Our first phrasal verb is to carry something out. We usually carry out an assessment (fazer uma avaliação), a repairman can carry out some repairs (fazer alguns reparos), companies can carry out changes (fazer mudanças) and inspectors can carry out safety checks (fazer vistorias de segurança).
2- The next verb is to close down. We use close down when we say that a company finishes its activites for good (para sempre), it is not operating anymore. We can say that a company closed down its low-profit stores ( fechou suas lojas improdutivas )or that a company closed down in a loss.( parou de atuar com prejuízo)
3- When you hear that your company needs to cut back or cut back on something, It means that they are going to reduce the cost or numbers of something. Here are some examples:
A- The funding for this project has been cut down. ( a verba para esse projeto foi reduzida)
B- We need to cut back our spending but it is way too high. ( Precisamos diminuir nossos gastos que estão muito alto)
4- Draw up. This verb means to prepare and write something, such as a business plan, guidelines, a list, or a contract. Some examples:
A- HR has drawn up a list of candidates they would like to interview. ( O pessoal dos Recursos Humanos preparou uma lista de candidatos que gostariam de entrevistar.)
B- Larissa and JB are drawing up the guidelines for the new project. ( Larissa e J.B. estão preparando as diretrizes para o novo projeto. )
C- Ask the lawyers to draw up a new contract. ( Peça aos advogados para redigir um novo contrato.)
5- Our next verb is to level off. If a rate levels off it stops increasing or decreasing and stays at the same level. Some examples:
A- After the initial boom, sales growth is starting to level off. ( Após a euforia inicial , o crescimento das vendas começaram a se estabilizar)
B- The unemployment rate has leveled off in the last couple of months.( A taxa de desemprego tem ficado nos mesmos indices nos últimos dois meses. )
6- Our last verb is to prop up. A prop is an object that keeps a structure from collapsing or falling down. To prop a company or an organization up is to help it by providing military or financial support.
Examples:
A_ The government is not willing to prop up inefficient companies anymore. ( O governo não beneficiará mais empresas ineficientes)
B_ They’re investing a lot of money to prop up failing business. ( Eles estão investindo muita grana para impulsionar negócios em queda)
C- The City Hall has propped up the museum with annual grants.( A prefeitura tem resgatado financeiramente o museu com doações anuais.
7- The phrasal verb "take up ' has many different meanings but in business it means to accept, as an offer or challenge. A person can't take up a bribe because it's illegal but you can take up a new challenge.
* O phrasal take up tem muitos significados diferentes , no entanto para negócios significa aceitar como oferta ou desafio. Uma pessoa não pode aceitar suborno ou propina porque é ilegal mas você pode aceitar um novo desafio.
